S&P Breaks Ground on New Highlands HS Athletics Project

Despite the light drizzle, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Highlands High School Athletics Additions and Renovations drew an enthusiastic crowd of San Antonio Independent School District supporters and elected officials. Among those in attendance were SAISD Superintendent Dr. Jaime Aquino, SAISD Deputy Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Thompson, Highlands High School Principal Dr. Penny Pruitt, Project General Contractor Satterfield & Pontikes (S&P) CEO George A. Pontikes Jr., and Project Architect Firm Perkins & Will.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Aquino praised the SAISD Bond 2020, calling it a “remarkable and officious project” that represents the largest bond package ever seen in the district, with a budget of $1.3 billion. He credited the unwavering support of community members as key to making the project possible.

“The SAISD Bond 2020 is more than just a construction project, it’s a testament to our collective commitment to investing in educational infrastructure,” said Dr. Aquino. “Our students and teachers deserve the best possible education in a safe, comfortable and nurturing environment that stimulates their learning and creativity. By improving our school facilities, we aim to surpass these expectations and set a new standard for education. With every brick we lay and every dream we dream, we come closer to achieving this goal. Let’s work together tirelessly and with unwavering commitment to create a new reality for our children and future generations.”

The SAISD Bond 2020 addresses the critical renovation needs of more than 36 buildings in the district, including 21 schools whose main buildings have not been fully renovated in more than 50 years, and most with 30-year-old infrastructure. The bond funds will also go toward completing the campus renovations of 15 schools that received partial renovations under Bond 2016 or Bond 2010, bringing them up to the same standards as the rest of the district.

S&P is proud to be working on this transformative project for the San Antonio ISD community. The Highlands High School Athletics project will consist of renovations, replacement, classrooms audio system, infrastructure, repaving, building of a new athletic building addition, competition gym and practice gym. With a long history of construction projects that elevate communities, the company is committed to delivering the Highlands High School Athletics Renovations and Additions build to the highest standards of excellence.

“Rain, snow, hurricanes, no matter – by August 2024 we are going to hand you your brand-new facility,” said Pontikes “We are very proud of our relationship and our history with San Antonio ISD.”

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Highlands High School is a significant milestone for the SAISD Bond 2020, and for the San Antonio ISD community as a whole. With construction planning and design work already underway, Satterfield & Pontikes, Perkins & Will, and the district are well on their way to delivering an educational infrastructure that meets the needs of students and teachers for generations to come.
