Project Spotlight: Greek Orthodox Cathedral

The renovation and expansion of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral (AGOC) demonstrates reverence for its history and commitment to its Montrose location. Rather than relocating or demolishing the existing 1950s structure, AGOC opted for a renovation and expansion that would maintain significant portions of its historic structure while expanding and enhancing the facilities.  

The expansion of the 9,690 square foot Cathedral increased the seating capacity from 350 to over 850. It also included expanding the nave, narthex, balcony, restrooms, bride’s room, vestry, and acolyte areas. New and restored iconography and stained-glass windows were installed along with a new organ and new pews. Also included were all new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and audio/visual systems. 

One of the most impressive features and the focal point of the AGOC is its massive new gold dome. The entire dome was prefabricated and assembled on the project site. The dome, over 44 feet in diameter and over 23 feet high, is clad in gold-finished, stainless steel metal roof panels. The remarkable dome took six months of design and engineering, three months of fabrication, five weeks of field assembly and a day of lift time. 

The project won many awards including: ABC EIC ICE Award, AGC APEX Silver Award, ENR Texas-Louisiana – Best Cultural/Worship, AGC – Texas Building Branch – Best of the Build (Across the State), AGC Contractors – Texas Building Branch – General Contractor ($5-$10M), National ABC EIC Eagle Award – Historical Renovation/Restoration, and ENR Texas-Louisiana – Second Best Overall (5 States).
