Project Spotlight: Fort Sam Houston Primary Care Clinic

Elevating Care for Military Families

The Fort Sam Houston Primary Care Clinic stands as an inspiration to healthcare within the military community. Covering an expansive 124,000 SF, this modernized, two-story clinic features a durable brick veneer and a design that emphasizes ample natural light, complemented by two large atriums.

The Silver LEED facility offers a wide variety of outpatient services, catering to family medicine, adolescent medicine, behavioral health, occupational therapy, physical therapy, laboratory services, radiology, and pharmacy services for families residing at Fort Sam and other government personnel. Serving the 27,000 military and civilian personnel on base, this facility is home to a dedicated team of 300 health care professionals and staff members and continues to play a pivotal role in alleviating the significant patient load from the base’s previously existing medical facilities.

As part of the Defense Base Relocation and Closure (BRAC) program, Satterfield & Pontikes Construction (S&P) was chosen to be the general contractor for the build. As an experienced health care builder, S&P was tasked to build not only the clinic but extensive sitework that involved excavation, topsoil fill, concrete curbs and pads, asphalt parking, landscaping, a detention pond, and more.

With a tight deadline in place, S&P was handed unexpected alterations to the building’s foundation. The Corps of Engineers determined that an additional type of steel rebar was needed to reinforce the foundation. This resulted in an extra 90 days of work and prompted a revised design from the architect.

Determined to maintain the original timeline and completion date, S&P enacted a massive schedule overhaul to the affected HVAC installation and trades coordination. Thanks to the exceptional work by the on-site scheduler, an accelerated schedule was constructed by stacking trade work and implementing a seven-day work schedule until the project was back on track with the original timeline. S&P’s expertise and unwavering commitment ensured the timely completion of the Primary Care Clinic, earning the well-deserved accolade of “Excellence in Construction – Healthcare” from Associated Builders & Contractors.
