Overview

Originally constructed in the 1930s, Building 2791 includes architectural features that had to be preserved in order to maintain the appearance of the original design. The three-story, 130,000 SF building was completely gutted and rebuilt without altering the interior of this historic structure. The restoration of the dormitory provides housing for 284 soldiers in 142 two-person living areas. The basement of the building was redesigned to serve as the headquarters of the Fort Sam Houston medical battalion.

As a federal historic renovation effort, the project followed parameters of the National Historic Preservation Act. To ensure that the visual character of the building was maintained, a special Army Alternate Procedures agreement that outlines more specific management practices was also in place and the project team consulted regularly with the Texas Historical Commission and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.

FORT SAM HOUSTON BUILDING 2791 RENOVATION
CENTER OF EXCELLENCE IN GOVERNMENT

“Satterfield & Pontikes teamed with PBS&J for a Design/Build project at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. The renovation of a historic building was challenging, and Satterfield & Pontikes worked closely with the owner to identify concerns or issues that were built into the overall program. Through good planning and frequent communication, the project team was able to provide true teamwork and collaboration with us and the client.”
